Greetings from Dave,
Open Championship Week
This week sees the 144th Open Championship taking place from St Andrews the home of golf. Jordan Speith is looking to win his 3rd major of the year which will get him even closer to winning the grand slam. World number 1 Rory Mcilroy will be watching it from home with his leg up wishing he had never played football just 2 weeks ago causing him that horrible ankle injury. I think the tournament is wide open and that there is probably 30 names I could pick out that have a real good chance. Obviously Speith is the favourite after winning the first 2 majors and winning last week in America on the PGA tour. Rickie Fowler is in great form having just won the Scottish Open in Aberdeen last Sunday. But my pick is Patrick Reed at a huge price of 55/1. If you back him each way then as long as he comes in the top 6 then you get a quarter of the odds giving you 13.75/1! He played great at Chambers Bay in the US Open which was a links style golf course similar to St Andrews. Patrick also controls his ball flight well and can hit different trajectory's shots with ease which is very useful for when it starts blowing a hooley. It must be getting to Reed inside after seeing his good pal Jordan winning all the time and him just falling short. This makes me think it will make him even more motivated to win than he already is.

Captains Away Day News
The Captain took a party of 58 to Carden Park in Cheshire and all came home a bit wet and worse for wear.
Despite the rain and the alcohol, a few managed to play some good golf. Andy Keen returned 38 points to win day one but his 2 shot reduction proved too much on day two when Ray Jackson set the early pace with 37 points that was never overtaken. The two pros performed admirably (not just in the bar) with Matt shooting one under the first day and Dan winning the longest drive.
The battle for the overall winner could not have been closer with Stevie Bate just pipping Phil Sermon on count back on day 2 both with a combined 69 points.
Kev Morris fresh back from holiday tried to steal the glory on day one with his first ever hole in one. A good time was had by all and we now await what Lynton has in store for us next year.
North Staffs League Memorial Trophy -
The team were successful in beating Malkins Bank at home by 2 games to 1 in their first round match, played as a green some format. They are now through to the semi-finals of this competition.
On Thursday 9th July the Vets were at home to Brookfields A and were determined to obtain revenge for a heavy away defeat of 4 games to 2 on the Brookfield course. Conditions could not have been better and with some inspired pairing, some fresh blood, and our local knowledge the team achieved a convincing 5 games to 1 victory (10pts to 2) This result places us 1 point ahead in Div One with 3 matches to play, interesting times ahead.

The latest mixed ladies and seniors charity competition for the Remembrance Trophy was held on 14th July. Runners up were Gill Lees and Phil Wilson with 38 points but the clear winners with 41 points were Julie Wright and Stewart Holdsworth.

Keith Palmer Seniors Section Secretary
The junior section is going from strength to strength. A couple of weeks ago you may remember me talking about young Zach Tallent. He has posted yet another amazing couple of score winning one of the July Stablefords with 41 points. He has now got his handicap down to 12 and is eligible to play in the men's competitions. Keep it up Zach.
Holly Branson is also doing very well at the minute she won the other July Stableford with an outstanding score of 47 points. Her handicap is now down to 47. Keep up the hard work Holly.
Junior Team
The Chase junior team had their first team match of the season on Sunday vs Ingestre Park golf Club. All the matches were very close and it went right to the last match. The final result was a friendly half, 2 ½ - 2 ½! Congratulations Team you did The Chase proud.
Junior Chase Chalice
On Tuesday 28th July we have another one of the majors, in the major competitions we like to juniors to go out in handicap order. This means that some of the younger juniors will be going out together, a couple of the parents and grandparents have already volunteered to walk round with them to make sure they are abiding by the rules and marking their cards correctly, any other volunteers would be much appreciated. If you would like to help out on the day please get in touch with Katrina.
