Course news

The return of golf

We are now only 5 days away from welcoming you all back to the golf club and to you all enjoying the golf course once again. It has certainly been the most challenging 3 months I have experienced in my greenkeeping career but also a time that has put many things into perspective.

The pandemic itself has thrown up many challenges but on top of that mother nature has not been the kindest with some of the wettest weather for years. I know I’ve never seen the course so wet. Despite all this, and with reduced staffing numbers, a concerted effort has been made to not only keep on top of things but to also making some improvements where possible.

I have previously mentioned the tree work which I know will have a big impact on playability, aesthetics and maintenance but on top of that we have also carried out the following:

Turfing of worn areas around bunkers
Aeration, top dressing & seeding of the greens, tees, collars & approaches
New tee markers made
All bunkers have been edged & weeded with a number having the faces cut back where they were starting to overhang
A few fairways have been re-shaped to improve playability
All playing surfaces have started to be cut on a slightly more regular basis to improve definition

I am fully aware that there are still things to do but we will be working hard over the next few weeks to tick things off our ‘to do' list.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Chris and Lesley who have once again shown their commitment to the golf course by authorising the purchase of two new pieces of equipment (fairway & rough mowers) that will further improve playing conditions. I would also like to thank Matt for his support and role in the whole process. A big thank you has to go to the greens staff for their efforts since their return.

We look forward to seeing you all over the coming weeks/months and I hope that everyone can appreciate the efforts that have been made to produce what we have so far.

Making the highlight reel

40-year-old Australian Matt Jones claimed victory at The Honda Classic on the beautiful-but-challenging PGA National golf course, with Denmark’s Sebastian Cappelen going shirtless for a watery chip before Wesley Bryan removed shoes and trousers for a couple of shots. That’s one way to make the highlight reel!

On the European Tour, Justin Harding proved the importance of avoiding errors as he went bogey-free in the final round to win the Magical Kenya Open. Sure, he did have a few birdies and an eagle on the day, but it was the bogey avoidance that saw him reign supreme.

We might not have the same wildlife as Nairobi’s Karen Country Club, but we can help you dodge those mistakes this season with a series of one-to-one lessons with a member of the team.

On the move

You probably think of your trolley as just a handy way to take the weight of a full golf bag off your shoulders as you walk the course (which it is), but nowadays your trolley can also take a huge weight off your mind as you play.

New Motocaddy GPS trolleys

Last year marked a significant upgrade in the world of GPS electric trolleys, and this year is set to follow suit.

To begin with, Motocaddy has added GPS technology to its highly popular M3 model for the first time! As the screen below shows, you will be able to view key yardages to the green at the quickest of glances.

If you want more then the M5 GPS gives you all of this but on a larger, higher-resolution touchscreen. In addition, you'll be presented with a dynamic green view that allows you to drag & drop the pin to match what you're faced with on the course.

1-iron or hybrid?

No matter how good you are, it’s easy to feel intimidated when placing an old-school 1-iron or 2-iron behind the ball. With the compact, ultra-thin head, you’d be forgiven for having a crisis of confidence at address… But that can be an issue.
