The Australian Open took place last week at the Australian Golf Club near Sydney. Jordan Spieth fired a course-record 63 in the final round to win by six shots. The 21-year-old American finished on a score of 13 under par, comfortably securing his second professional title.
Jordan said yesterday in his interview that it’s the best he’s ever played, which included eight birdies in his final round. Adam Scott was fifth on four under par, while Rory, the defending champion and world number 1, finished 15 shots back! McIlroy was one shot off the lead halfway through the tournament but a shocking third round of 76 followed by an average final round of 72 left him in a tie for 15th. Spieth’s first professional win came at last year's John Deere Classic in emphatic style. The Texan, who finished runner-up at this year's Masters, becomes the first American winner of the Australian Open since Brad Faxon in 1993. I think Spieth could be a hot favourite for his first major win next year.
Presentation Evening
The presentation evening took place last Friday with yet another well supported members evening with over 100 members attending. This year’s man of the night was Liam Bills picking his Club Championship trophy up, with his very proud Dad (Lee Bills) looking on. Liam even managed to mention “pineapple” in his winner’s speech to win a bet.

Get into golf
Our next Get into Golf class will be starting on January 6th. The 1 hour beginner sessions will run over 5 consecutive weeks and offer an affordable way to get started at the game. The cost of the 5 week programme is only £25 for the 5 sessions. The sessions offer a step by step guide to the basics, from grip, posture, driving pitching, chipping, putting and rules. Junior golf coaching
We now have spaces available in our Junior Golf Passport classes for children 4-15 years of age. We run a number of different classes on Saturdays, Sundays, Tuesday evenings & Wednesday evenings. If your child, grandchild or anyone you know would like to come along to our fun and relaxed classes please speak to Tom or Kat in the Performance Centre.
WC 1st December
On Monday 1st December the Seniors played their Christmas Texas Scramble over 9 holes. Results were:
Gold award went to Mike Pearson, Chris Ball, Dave Bennetts and Ray Grice with a score of 25.75
Silver award went to Mike Whitehouse, Alan Smith, Tony Archbold and Brian Haynes also with 25.75
Bronze was awarded to Pete Caswell, Tony Page, George Brookes and Keith Bailey who played as two pairs after their teams were decimated by un-notified absences, no shows and serious illness.
A collection on behalf of the Captains' Charity (St Giles Hospice) at each table during the Christmas Lunch raised £119.

Fairway maintenance
We have recently carried out some verti-draining aeration of all the fairways as part of our ongoing maintenance programme. The process involved spiking the fairways with 25mm diameter solid metal tines to a depth of around 175mm and a heaving action fractured the soil profile. All of this will encourage deeper rooting of the grass plant, improve drainage capabilities, allow gaseous exchange to occur and together these will see the general condition of the fairways improve as the grass plants become healthier and stronger.
