Greetings from Matt Southwell
The Chase Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Greetings from Dan & Dave

What a great weekend it was for European golf, beating the yanks 16 ½ - 11 ½ at Gleneagles in the 40th Ryder Cup! Europe have still got a bit of catching up to do trailing USA by 12 victories since 1927. This year Europe got off to a ropey start on Friday morning losing the fourballs session 2 ½ to 1 ½. The afternoon session on both days was dominated by the European side to give us a 10-6 lead going into the singles on the final day. Even with this lead a European victory wasn't certain, as the miracle in Medinah two years previous proved.

World Number 1 Rory McIlroy set the pace in the singles being 6 under par after 6 holes and then eventually beating Rickie Fowler 5&4! G Mac did us proud beating young Jordan Spieth 2&1 after being 4 down at one stage. Rookie Jamie Donaldson won the Ryder Cup for Europe after knocking it to 3ft on the 15th hole in which Keegan Bradley conceded to win the match 4&3.

Well done Europe! Roll on the 41st Ryder Cup in 2016 at Hazeltine Golf Club.

Road to the Ryder Cup sponsored by Knights BMW

What a prize!

Lance Round and Jat Singh qualified for the Road to the Ryder Cup finals at Royal Birkdale G.C. through our Club Championships. They were victorious there which meant they won a VIP trip to the Ryder Cup courtesy of our partners at Knights BMW. The prize included accommodation at Cameron House then hospitality in the BMW VIP Lounge overlooking the 18th green where no expenses were spared with the champagne flowing! Unknown to them at the time of winning, they could invite a guest! Suddenly they both had lots more friends! Jat decided to take his good friend Dave Whitehouse and Lance took his dad Paul, how happy were they?!!

Lance said of the trip, 'What a fantastic weekend at The Ryder Cup with excellent hospitality, such an amazing experience'.

Jat said, 'What an unbelievable opportunity to see the Ryder Cup in this way. The BMW experience surpassed all my expectations. Absolutely amazing!'

All this was possible due to our partnership with Knights BMW so a big thank you to them.

As you can see from the image they all made a new friend.

Thursday Night League

The Thursday Night League has been well supported this year, with a total of 136 players taking part. We have seen some very good scoring too! With 24 points the highest stableford score was set by Matt Swift. However the overall winner of the summer league was Daz Ward who showed his consistency, averaging just over 19 points in his best ten rounds. Well done Daz!!! I’m sure the handicap committee will be in contact soon.

For next year we are looking at changing the format of the Thursday Night League to try and increase interest. If anyone has any suggestions please contact a member of the professional team.

Weekday Medal Sunday, 28 September 2014

Another great turnout for the weekend medal last Sunday, with 59 members competing and a total and eight players getting a 2. The winner, Adrian Holford, has been on top form lately, resulting in an exceptional score reduction and a new handicap of 9.9!! Adrian’s handicap was 17 at the start of the year, this just shows that lessons and hard work pays off. Well done and enjoy your new handicap!!

The Lady Captain's Mixed Away Break at Breadsall Priory Sunday 21st was a huge success and blessed with the ongoing superb "Indian Summer".

The Seniors interclub season is slowly drawing to a close and on Tuesday 23rd entertained a strong Caderfields side. The games begun badly for the Chase with the Seniors Captain and his favourite and perhaps most reliable batman struggling from the offset and ultimately losing the first game Was this selection as gruesome perhaps as the opening day Ryder Cup pairing of Poulter and Gallagher??

The remaining troops rallied, however, and with strength in depth managed to achieve a creditable final result of a 4.5 points to 3.5 points win.

Barlaston away on Thursday, how would this go?

On a course renowned for having to choose the right club and to place the ball in the right position with every shot. This time, however, the Captain got his pairings spot on, leading from the front with a new batman and spurring on his team to an overwhelming 6 games to 2 victory.

Monday 29th was the date for the strongly supported Veterans Trophy with more than 40 gentlemen over the age of 70 patricipating. From the results below you can see why this group is known for the number of bandits amongst its members with bandit No1 emerging supreme in a high scoring competition.

  1. Ray Care 42pts
  2. Graham McLeod 41pts
  3. Graham Bunch 38pts
  4. Brian Brookes 38pts

The inaugural over 80's trophy played alongside the Vets was won by its proposer Mike Reed with 28 pts winning by a single point from George Taylor. There would have been seven octogenarians taking part, but unfortunately two remained at home to look after their unwell wives. Our best wishes for their recovery. Alan Sheppard has kindly donated a trophy for this event to be played for annually

  • Seniors Autumn Trophy 6th October
  • Final Interclub match at home to Lakeside on 9th October

Finally the Lady Captain's fundraiser is on Thursday 9th October 7 for 7.30 at The Essence of the Orient, with a splendid buffet, raffle prizes and a superb auction all to wet your appetite. Tickets are still available, £17 from the bar or from Marlene.
