Welcome to another edition of our newsletter, in this week’s mail we welcome the new range of FootJoy shoes into the shop, we have the recent Winter League result, and there is a message from the seniors ahead of the 2019 season. Enjoy the read!

Is it time for a new pair?

The 2019 FootJoy shoes got delivered on Wednesday to the Professional shop and what an impressive shoe range it is. The popular spikeless Pro/SL continues with a slight change in look but still will be the biggest seller I feel.

A new shoe called the Superlites XP has been added to the range for this year. Also a Spikeless shoe but incredibly light, perfect for that dry summer’s day.

We are also stocking one of FootJoy’s top shoes called the Tour S which is a fully waterproof soft spiked shoe used by many of the tour boys. I used this shoe last year to play in and it has to be the best golf shoe I have ever worn.

Next time your up the club please pop in and have a look at the FJ shoe wall and maybe treat yourself for the season ahead.

Range Night

Don't forget about our range night, every Thursday throughout the winter from 6pm – 7.30pm. This will be a fantastic opportunity for you to pick up some great tips... If you’re already having lessons then this is the perfect chance for you to have some supervised practice. Range Balls Included - £5pp

Senior news

The season ahead…

I would like to start this week’s senior section by wishing Dave Morgan all the best in his new job from all in the senior section.

As the new 2019 season approaches I would remind our senior members we are seeking players who would like to be considered for selection for the Chase Veterans team. The format is as last year, consisting of teams of 12 players in 6 pairs playing matchplay. Strokes allowed are as 90% of the difference off the lowest handicap in their 4 ball, maximum handicap being 18.

Players with a handicap above 18 can play but will play to 18 maximum on the day. Running alongside is the Emery Hughes Price memorial trophy of which we are the current holders, the first round is against Wychwood Park here at The Chase on Thursday 4th April. This is a matchplay greensomes with the same handicap allowances but with 3 pairs each side.

Sheets for the first two matches and the E/H/P first round will be on the Vets board in the next week for anyone interested in playing. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask myself or Brian Preece. Here's hoping for a successful season and I hope everyone has a happy and enjoyable years golf.

Senior Winter Competition

After the wet weather at the weekend Monday brought the seniors a lovely sunny day, it was a shame we had no competition arranged. The next senior section winter competition is on Monday 18th February and is a 9 hole multiplier.

Captains Charity Chinese Banquet

With the comments I have received on my mistake with the month in last week’s newsletter it nice to know so of you actually read my ramblings. To clear any confusion, the Chinese Banquet for the Captains charity is on Thursday 21st February at the Chase Golf Club. Tickets are £18 and are available from the Senior Captain and Vice-Captain.

Senior AGM

The senior AGM is on Monday 4th March. Official notices will soon be on the noticeboard. We are looking for new committee members; if you are interested please speak to a committee member.

Tactics, tactics, tactics

There will always come a time when, as a golfer, you need to really attack the pin to give yourself a chance of making a certain score on a hole. However, whether or not you choose to depends as much on the positioning of the flag than anything else.

Scenario #1

Take the above illustration, for example; with the flag cut so close to both the bunker and the edge the green which slopes away from you, you would be better off taking any danger out of play by aiming for the middle of the green. This will help you avoid trouble and any dropped shots, even if you miscue slightly.

Scenario #2

However, if the flag is in a more central position – as shown in the second illustration above – then you can be a lot more aggressive with your shot. Take aim straight at the pin and commit to your shot. Hopefully, you’ll be reaping the rewards when you step onto the green for a great chance of making a two-putt par.
