Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship
The second event of the 2018 European Tour schedule kicks off this week in what is the first of three tournaments in the desert. This week’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship takes place at Abu Dhabi G.C. It’s set to be an exciting four days of golf with a great field of players including Dustin Johnson and Rory Mcilroy.
Keep a look out for an amateur taking part called Dan Kirkwood. Dan is a Stafford lad who actually went to my high school (Walton High) and was a member of Ingestre Park G.C. He moved to Abu Dhabi for work reasons and became a member of Yas Links G.C. He managed to win a qualifier there to gain entry into this week’s tournament. What a great opportunity for Dan to be playing in such a huge event with some of the world’s best players.

Last week we dispelled the myth that custom fitting is only for low-handicap golfers – if you didn’t give it a read then make sure you do! Regardless of your ability, one of the key focuses during any iron fitting will be your dispersion and here’s why it’s so important.
Where do you aim? As you can see in the image above, a player adopting a more aggressive strategy, highlighted in red, brings the water more into play. We would always recommend in this situation to aim for the middle of the green, as shown in white, to reduce the chance of racking up a big number. This more conservative strategy also gives you a greater margin for error should you mishit your shot.
Learning your dispersion averages and where your common miss is at a custom fitting will only help you in these situations.
One forgiving model that will help tackle your bad strikes and tighten up your dispersion is the new Wilson Staff C300. It features Power Holes around the head that minimise contact between the body and face for maximum flexing, which generates faster ball speeds across the whole face for distance with forgiveness.

So you’ve bombed a Rory-esque drive down the fairway and walk off the tee delighted, but do you know the correct ruling if you reach your ball and find it half submerged in casual water?
If your ball comes to rest in an abnormal ground condition – such as casual water, ground under repair or a hole made by an animal – you are entitled to free relief. Remember though, turf that is merely wet, spongy or muddy is not considered casual water.
You are entitled to drop within one club-length and no nearer the hole than your nearest point of relief. To determine your nearest point of relief, you must find the closest spot where there is no longer any water visible on the surface before or after you take your stance.
Once you’ve found your nearest point of relief, you must next lift and then drop your ball within one club-length, no nearer the hole. It’s also worth noting that when the new rules come in on January 1st 2019, you’ll be able to drop your ball from any height.
