Captain’s away trip
Many congratulations to our Captain, Ian Schofield, for organising a fantastic away break last Sunday/Monday. 58 club members descended on St Pierre and enjoyed two fabulous days golf with great accommodation. St Pierre even put up a projector screen for us so that we did not miss the World Cup Final during our evening meal.
There were lots of competitions and side bets to play for and I have listed some of the winners below.
Day 1 Winner – Sam Timmins 39pts
Day 2 Winner – Daz Ward, Daz also picked up most improved player and nearest the pin on day 2 (must have had an early night!)
- Overall 3rd Place – Mark Simmons (right - 67pts)
- Overall 2nd Place – Brian Cheshire (below, left - 68pts)
- Overall Winner – Keith Palmer (below, right - 69pts)
Congratulations to Keith on winning the overall prize with some very steady golf around two tough golf courses. I’m sure the handicap committee will be in touch!
Club Champs
This Sunday see’s the pinnacle golf event of the year and for most of our members the competition they would most like to win. The defending Champions have been working hard on their games over the last few weeks and will be looking to re-ignite the form they showed in winning last year, but there is plenty of competition to fend off as we have nearly 130 people entered into the Championships this year.
Every year I hand out my predictions for those to look out for in the winners circle but this has proved to maybe add a little too much pressure on to the chosen few, but hey if you're going to win you will have to handle the pressure!! Going on recent form in the men’s section look no further than defending Champion Tony Anderton for the Gross and in form Adrian Holford in the Nett competition. In the Seniors event the competition is tight but again look out for defending gross champion Andy Keen and the in form Sam Timmins & Keith Palmer in the Nett event. My wife Fiona is playing in the Ladies section so it goes without saying that I will be choosing her as my pick, but she will have her work cut out against Rachel Bishop the favourite to win the Ladies Gross event. Good luck to everyone playing, but most importantly just enjoy the day!
The presentation will take place as soon as possible after the last group are finished, please make every effort to attend and support your new club champions.
Due to the high volume of activities taking place on Sunday could I ask competitors where possible to car share for the day and make use of both health club and driving range car parks.
Congratulations to the winners of the Senior Captains Cup on Mon 7th – results in last weeks newsletter
On Tuesday 8th July the interclub team entertained Izaak Walton at home and despite Izaak Walton providing a very strong team as shown by their handicaps the Chase team dug in deep to produce an excellent 4.5 to 3.5 winning score. On this occasion the Senior Captain, in his closing speech, expressed concern for the weight he had just been carrying particularly as his Dr had recently told him to avoid heavy duties. I leave it to your imagination as to what he meant by this remark.
Monday 14th Roll Up had only 11 entrants with results being
- Martin Etheridge 41 pts
- Mick McGuire 38 pts
The Club Captains away day was well represented by Senior members on 13th and 14th July with the 'coffin dodgers' proving there is still life in the old codgers!!!
Congratulation also to Sid Wise and Alan Chambers who won the Seniors Open at Hawkstone Park GC on 4th June with a very creditable 40 points

I hope you enjoy watching The Open this weekend, who’s your money on? This year my predictions have actually done pretty well so if you fancy a flutter then I’m backing Rory McIlroy to win with each way bets on Graham McDowell, Jamie Donaldson and Paul Casey.
We will be having plenty of Open specials in the shop over the weekend so make sure you pay a visit to the Performance Centre to grab an Open bargain.
For this month the club is offering discounted membership when golf partners join the Health Club. If you'd like to know more about this please click here or contact the membership team.
