Open Championship Final Qualifying
I took Chase Golf club member Tom Beasley to the Open Championship final qualifying on Tuesday at Hollinwell golf club. The golf course was the best condition course I have seen in a long time. See the picture of how good the first tee was! This was one of five final qualifying venues around the country. The field of players is a mixture of very good amateurs, club pros, playing pros and even tour pros that have qualified at a regional event a few weeks ago. We left at 5.15am so we could get there for the first tee as Rocky was playing! He struggled with a bad back for both rounds and ended up walking off on the back nine of his second round. If you have the day off next year then have a trip down to one of the venues as it's a great day and free of charge to get in.
Royal Birkdale
The Open Championship is only two weeks away now with the excitement building of who is going to clinch that 3rd major championship.
We are now running the normal Open sweep in the starter's hut. For those of you who don't know how the sweep draw works, all you need to do is pay £2 and draw a name then if your player comes in the top 3 then you will receive a shop voucher for either £50, £30 or £20 depending on where your player finishes.
Good luck to all and remember to be quick to get those remaining tickets.

Nutrition
Some of you may know Ryan Bristow but for those of you don't he is a personal trainer in our health club. He also is a qualified nutrionist. Please see some important information from Ryan himself on hydration on the golf course.
Is dehydration risking your performance?
Hydration is key to life…
Water makes up over 60% of the body and is involved in pretty much every bodily function… so it goes without saying that your golf performance is no different.
HOWEVER, in a recent study it was identified that over 40% of golfers start their round already dehydrated and over 60% then go on to finish 18-holes in a dehydrated state. This alone suggests that fluid intake prior to play and out on the course is not up to the required level.
But what does this mean for you and your performance?
Well, in a separate study it has been found that dehydration in golfers resulted in a 14-metre reduction in distance off the tee, as well as negatively affecting shot accuracy by an average of 4-yards. There were repercussions mentally too as the players were also less likely to judge the correct distance remaining to the hole, potentially affecting shot selection.
Ultimately, these performance decrements resulted in players recording an average of 4 more shots across the round… just because they were dehydrated. So clearly the takeaway message is to make sure you're well hydrated when you arrive at the 1st tee and then remain that way until your final putt on the 18th.
…but how can you tell if you are in fact dehydrated?
As unpleasant as it sounds, your urine colour gives a reasonable indication of hydration status when 'in the field'. So you should be aiming for relatively clear, straw coloured urine, with a frequent need to 'go'.
There you have it, something as simple as drinking enough water every day can have such an effect on your performance. I have provided some hydration tips below to make sure you're doing everything you can before you next hit the course.
Hydration tips:
- Start hydrating early in the morning to avoid playing 'catch up' on the course
- Ensure you have enough fluids in your bag to get you through 18 holes
- You should aim for 500ml per 60 minutes of play
- Increase the amount of fluids even further during hot/ humid weather
- Consider including an electrolyte solution to replace those lost through sweat
- Get in to a habit of taking on fluids at regular intervals i.e. when walking to the next hole or whilst you're walking up the fairway so you don't 'forget'
- Get plenty of water in after the round to support your recovery (ideally before your usual in the 19th)

Senior Matches
It was a home match for the Seniors this week with the return fixture against Lichfield GC. With a one point loss at Lichfield GC last week the Seniors were out for a win in the return fixture. With it raining all day a very wet senior team lead by the Senior Captain assisted (or some may say carried) by his nameless partner set the scene with a victory which the team responded to saw a 6.5 to 0.5 win. Despite the condition all enjoyed the good company and an excellent meal.
