Set Your Posture For Success

A good posture position is an essential element if you are to have success of becoming a consistent ball striker. Your posture is the foundation that supports the swing. Many swing problems are just a result of poor posture. Good posture is important as it will determine the shape of your swing and effect how you strike the golf ball. Being in the proper posture position allows the golfer to make the correct turn, pivot and rotation back and through the ball during the golf swing. You don't have to be athletic to achieve a great posture position. Just follow the 5 simple tips below. They work for golfers of all shapes and sizes.

A good golf swing requires a good turn around your spine or central column. The better the position of your posture at address the more effectively you will be able to perform this motion. One of the biggest problems I see when out on the range teaching is what we call the 'C' shaped posture, which is when the golfer has a curved spine angle. This is due to slouching shoulders or set in a slumped position. This will put pressure on you back and will drastically reduce the amount you are able to rotate during the swing. When the body is not properly set-up, the swing and speed of the club, along with poor posture, adds up to being off balance and losing control of the club. Your body weight at address must be in a balanced position with the weight on the balls of the feet; having poor posture will also affect your balance.

                Poor Posture                     Good Posture

Follow these 5 simple steps to help your achieve the perfect posture:

  1. Stand tall with bend of the knees
  2. Place a club across your hip line. Keeping your chin up, tilt from the pelvis over the club keeping your body weight on the balls of your feet in a balanced position. You should tilt until your shoulders are over the top of your shoes or about 45 degree
  3. Let your arms flop and hang down in front of you (Pic 1)
  4. The club should be gripped in a position where your arms hang naturally
  5. Now you're in the correct position take your stance. Depending on the club you're using your stance should generally be a little wider than should width apart.
