Greetings,

The Masters

Augusta Masters

Well the first golf major of the year didn't disappoint with the last round being one of the best Sunday finishes at the Masters that I can remember. Two Europeans in the final group battling it out for the green jacket was something very special. But something even more special than that was the fact that Spaniard Sergio Garcia could win his first ever major on the day of Seve's 60th Birthday.

It looked like Sergio had it wrapped up after 5 holes after getting off to such a fast start and Rose being 3 behind after 5. It soon changed with Rose making 3 birdies in a row and them being all square at the turn. The back nine was very up and down with Sergio bogeying holes 10 and 11 but replied with a birdie at 14 then an eagle at 15. Justin's putting let him down at the end with it going to a playoff. Rose's tee shot and second shot cost him the tournament with him making bogey and giving Sergio two putts for the win.

Other than Westwood, Monty and a couple of other players no one deserves to win a major championship more than him. He's struggled mentally in the past with him coming so close to winning one and also his putting has been a real struggle in recent years. It shows real class to overcome those things and finally win one. Well done SERGIO!

Penkridge Masters

Our first major of the year took place on Sunday 9th April in beautiful sunny conditions with a full field of 115 players taking part. The first tee off was bright and early starting at 7.30am with the final 3 ball teeing off at 2pm. The scoring wasn't as low as many people thought with the winning score being a nett 69 shot by single figure handicapper Paul Nicholls. Congratulations Paul on winning the first major of the year. Please see the Penkridge Masters and Saturdays Par 3 Championship results below;

Trevor Foster and Steve Foster achieved this on Saturday in the par 3 competition. Awesome golf, well done guys!

Custom fitting

10 Yard Challenge

We would like to thank everyone who took part in the 10 yard driving challenge on Saturday 15th April. Over the course of the afternoon Dan was able to increase everyone's driving distance with the use of the latest equipment… Some proved more difficult than others…

PINGDavid Ley had the biggest distance gain on the day, an increase of 47 yards! This proves the importance of getting your clubs custom fit - making sure they are correct for your individual swing.

Coaching news

The grip is the only contact golfers have with the club; they have the biggest influence on which position the club face will return to at impact with the ball. A good grip will reduce the chances of making a bad swing, without a correct grip your chance of hitting good consistent shots is very difficult. Many bad shots of course come from a golfer's swing but many swing faults I see stem from an incorrect positioning of the hands on the grip.

So…… How do we grip the club correctly? Follow these easy steps and you will be on the path to a more consistent swing:

1. Place the grip into the fingers of the left hand. The grip should sit between the middle of the index finger to the base of the little finger.

2. Close the fingers and wrap the hand over the grip. There should be 2 visible knuckles on the left hand. Another good check point is the 'V' that is created by the thumb and index finger should point up between the chin and right shoulder. This will place the left hand in the neutral position.

3. Now place the right hand underneath making sure both hands are close together with no gap between the fingers. The grip again should sit in the fingers the same as the left hand. The left thumb should sit comfortably in the pad of the right hand.

4. The 'V' between the thumb and index finger should again point between the chin and right shoulder.

Welcome from the Senior Section - Report by Barrie Morgan

With my return from a warmer climate a few results to catch up on.

Division 2: 1st Brian Hartley 70, 2nd Kev Jenkins 70 and 3rd David Brace 75
