Greetings from Matt Southwell
The Chase Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Greetings From Matt

We have certainly been enjoying some summer like weather of late and we are seeing a huge increase in people popping up to the club after work to get some mid week games in. Please make sure you pop into either the Starters Hut or Performance Centre to register for your tee time.

The golf course is looking fantastic at the moment and really seems like it has stepped up a level this year, not only in quality but in maturity as well. The summer months do however turn our best winter asset into a irritation throughout the summer as although we enjoy an exceptionally well drained course through the winter this does mean we can become a little bouncy during the summer months. Of course this does mean those unreachable par 4's become attainable as the ball bounds down the fairways but adjustments will have to be made to your approach shots and short game to take advantage of those long tee shots.

One of the easy things you can do to combat the bouncy conditions is make sure your equipment is fit for purpose. The two most important questions to ask yourself are.

Am I using the correct ball? - Using the correct ball that allows you maximum compression and creates the most short iron/wedge spin will undoubtedly give you more control with your short game and approach shots.

Do I have the correct wedges? Using and choosing the correct loft on your shortgame shots is vital, are you a links style bump and runner or a Phil Mickelson flopper, either way making sure your clubs are good for the job is crucial.

Click here to answer me the three questions below and I will be in touch with recommendations of ways to improve and adapt to the summer conditions.

What is your current golf ball?
What wedges do you have in your bag?
Links Bumper or Phil Flopper? (do you tend to take the low route or choose more loft)

Tour News Miguel Winning at 50!! The Open de Espana was a tough test of golf for some of Europe's best played around the course that holds the European Tours Q school The PGA Catalunya. Jimenez has now won 21 European Tour titles, 14 of them coming since he turned 40, and Sunday's hard-fought victory continues a remarkable season for the Snr record breaker. So without doubt Miguels best golfing years have come later in life, so why can't yours? Thankfully Miguel did let us all the secret of his success during his interview, he puts it down to three things, Good food, good wine, good cigars, oh and a little bit of exercise!

This week on Tour see's the BMW PGA Championship, the flagship event of the PGA always brings great drama due to the nature of the finishing holes, who is your money on? Although this tournament normally throws up some un-expected winners and contenders I feel this year may be dominated by some of the big British stars, Look out for the likes of Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter and Justin Rose hanging around the top of leader board come Sunday Afternoon.

Someone else to look out for on the golf coverage on Thursday and Friday is our very own Course Manager Simon who has been asked to lend a hand at the Tournament.

There were 2 senior interclub events during the week with The Chase entertaining Lichfield at home on the Monday. Unfortunately, despite a heroic performance by the Captain, this proved to be our first defeat of the season so far with Lichfield being victorious by a score of 4.5 : 2.5 It may be coincidental but the result could have been related to some of the regular team players being busy collecting silverware elsewhere. (See details below).

Pride was restored, however, when the team travelled to Lakeside GC on Thursday and scored a resounding 5.5 : 2.5 victory.

Barlaston G C at home is the next interclub match on Thursday 22nd May

There were no North Staffs Vets match's during the week with the next competitions being away to Blythe Bridge on Friday 6th June and away at Whiston Hall on Thursday 12th June.

By the time you receive this newsletter the 4th LE will have taken place on Monday 19th May. Early indications are that members have responded well to the "avoid slow play" request with round times being at max about 4 hrs 20 minutes.

Please note, however, that several members were seen walking back to the tee having lost their ball (if in doubt play a provisional). There was also evidence of un-raked bunkers, please follow the correct etiquette with this. The 16th June and 23rd June are future dates for LE competitions

Results of the first Seniors Roll Up competition played on 12th May were as follows:
1st Barry Woodward 36 points
2nd Noel Mack 33 points
3rd Fred Ainsworth 30 points

Other Roll Up dates for your diary are 9th June, 14th July and 21st July. Finally our congratulations to Richard Davis and Peter McDonald on achieving a creditable third place with 40 points at the SUGC spring meeting held at Beaudesert G C. The word b..dits is not one I would suggest.
