Greetings golfers,
This week saw the passing of the legend Arnold Palmer at the age of 87. He changed the face of golf and grew the game in popularity just as television was coming of age. Not only was he a legend in golf winning countless amounts of tournaments and majors but he did so much away from the game, opening hospitals and helping others.
Arnold, Jack Nicholas and Gary Player were known as the Big Three and grew the game to prime time television viewing. These three battled it out in the majors and made golf interesting. Palmer won The Masters 4 times, The Open once and the US Open twice but never got the USPGA under his belt.
On Monday morning we woke up to the news of his passing with all of 'Arnie's Army' paying tribute to The King of golf, among the millions were President Obama and George W Bush.
With the Ryder Cup starting this week I'm sure we will see both teams paying tribute to Palmer in some way.
R.I.P Arnold Palmer #TheKing
Therese and John Douglas met 'The King'
"Arnold Palmer dying brought back wonderful memories for John and I and of his 65th birthday trip to Florida. We visited a long lost priest friend of ours, Fr Boyle who happened to be working in Orlando at the time. It turned out he was a member of Bay Hill Golf Club and one afternoon he took us to the club to have a look around and for a bite to eat. On the tour of the practice area, to our surprise Arnie was practicing and we were privileged enough to be introduced to 'The King'. What a wonderful ordinary man, when Fr Boyle asked him could we have a photograph taken with him Arnie asked us if we're enjoying our trip, chuckled put his arm around us saying "sure no problem, ready?"
So still with my shopping from the club Pro shop in hand, we had our photo, it was obviously the icing on the cake for John's 65th Birthday and an experience we will never forget."

This week is almost everyone's favourite week of the golfing calendar with the Ryder Cup starting on Friday. Here are some interesting facts about the Ryder Cup and the venue - Hazeltine Golf Club - The official Ryder Cup trophy is exactly 17 inches tall, 9 inches wide, weighs 4 pounds and was modelled to resemble British golfing great Abe Mitchell
- Between the years of 1935 & 1985, Europe only won the Ryder Cup once!
- In 1977, Englishman Peter Dawson was the first left hander to play in the Ryder Cup
- Sir Nick Faldo holds the record for the most match wins with 23 victories!
- Colin Montgomery has the record for the highest overall points in singles history with 6 wins and 2 halves " There have only been 6 holes-in-one in the history of the Ryder Cup, just one of these was by an American
- Captain's picks were introduced in 1979, since then it's been Europe who have benefited the most by winning 52% of their matches involving captain's picks
- The club that hosted the Ryder Cup the most times (4) - The Belfry
- Justin Leonard's famous 1999 putt to take the half against Jose Maria Olazabal was 45 yards long!
- Hazeltine has hosted every US Major USGA & PGA of America Championship. Since the course opened in 1962, the Robert Trent Jones designed course has hosted every championship available in the United States. It is one of two courses in the world that has hosted a U.S. Open, PGA Championship, U.S. Senior Open, U.S. Women's Open, U.S. Amateur Championship, and now a Ryder Cup.
- The course has been rerouted for the Ryder Cup, the PGA of America has rerouted the setup of the course for the 2016 Ryder Cup from the way it played at the 2009 PGA Championship.
After playing the first four holes, the rest of the front nine will consist of holes 14 through 18. Then the back nine begins with the original holes 10 through 13 before jumping back to the original holes five through nine. The new setup will improve the viewing experience of fans and help spectators coming on and off the property.
FedExCup
Last weekend saw the finale of the Fed Ex Cup with the Tour Championship being played and what an exciting and thrilling finish it was. For those who don't follow golf the winner of the FedEx wins a whopping 10 Million US dollars. It was very close, going to a 3 man sudden death playoff between Rory McIlroy, Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore. Dustin Johnson had a nervous hour waiting in the club house as if Chappell or Moore won the Tour Championship then he would win the FedEx and the 10 million dollars but if Rory won then he would claim title.
With Chappell parring the first play-off hole and the others birdying it, he fell at the first hurdle, Moore and McIlroy battled on for another 3 holes. Rory sunk a good 12 foot birdie putt at the 4th extra hole to claim the Tour Champion and the Fed Ex Cup winning a total of 11.5 million dollars.
Well done Rory!
