Greetings,
Who will your money be on?
The Masters tournament at Augusta National Golf Club is one of the most popular sporting events of the year. Invitation-only, the golf tournament is always the first major of the PGA Tour season, and is played at one of the most iconic venues in all of professional sports: Augusta National Golf Club. The annual tournament is full of history and tradition, and the illustrious green jacket that the winner receives may be the most prestigious individual honour a professional golfer can get.
So, who are the favourites to come away with the green jacket this year? Here's a look at the seven golfers with the best odds of winning the 2016 Masters
Phil Mickelson - 20/1
Mickelson is one of golf's all-time greats, and anytime "Lefty" is in the field at Augusta National, he has to be considered a legitimate contender. He will be attempting to win his fourth career green jacket this year, and based on his strong play so far this season (five top-25 and three top-10 finishes), we like his chances.
Rickie Fowler - 16/1
Fowler is one of the best young golfers in the world, and despite all of the success the 2010 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has enjoyed during his professional career, he is still out to capture his first major championship title. Fowler has had his sights set on winning the 2016 green jacket for some time now - he even had his equipment provider, Cobra, design him a new club specifically with the par-5 15th hole at Augusta National in mind - and with the way he has played over the last two months, we like his chances.
Adam Scott - 11/1
Scott is currently sitting at No. 6 in the Official World Golf Rankings, and is currently in 1st-place in the 2016 FedEx Cup standings. The 35-year-old Australian already has a green jacket on his resume (he won it in 2013), and with the way he has been playing in 2016 - he already has two wins and four top-10 finishes - Scott has to be considered one of the front-runners at this year's Masters.
Bubba Watson - 10/1
With wins in 2012 and 2014, Watson is no stranger to success at Augusta National. And he is absolutely one of the favourites to take home the green jacket in 2016. He is currently the No. 4 ranked golfer in the world, and with four top-25 and three top-10 finishes - which included wins at the Hero World Challenge and the Northern Trust Open - it is clear that Watson is currently playing near the top of his game. That said, even if he does indeed end up winning the Masters in 2016, he will have a hard time hitting a shot that would top his recovery out of the trees, which is arguably the greatest shot in Masters History, to set up his 2012 win.
Rory McIlroy - 7.5/1
Anytime McIlroy is in the field at Augusta National he has to be considered one of the favourites to come away with the green jacket. His game and style of play match up well with the course, and let's not forget, the 26-year-old Northern Ireland native thrives on the game's biggest stages. If McIlroy can come away with a Masters win in 2016, he will become the seventh player in golf history to complete the career grand slam.
Jordan Spieth - 7.5/1
Spieth's win at Augusta in 2015 set up the Texas native for one of the greatest seasons by an individual golfer in recent memory. While he hasn't been playing particularly well (by his standards) as of late, we still like his chances to defend his title at Augusta National in 2016, especially now that he has a Texas-sized chip on his shoulder after losing his spot at the No. 1 player in the world to Jason Day.
Jason Day - 6.5/1
Day recently leapfrogged Spieth for the No. 1 spot in the World Golf Rankings, and based on his play as of late, it should come as no surprise that the 28-year-old Australian is the favourite to win the green jacket in 2016. Day has won each of his last two events - the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play - and in total, he has two wins, three top-10 and five top-25 finishes this season. All said, don't be surprised if Day comes away with the second major championship title of his career at the 2016 Masters.
